PHOTO RADAR SLOWS SPEEDERS: ONTARIO PUBLISHES RESULTS OF FOUR-MONTH PRELIMINARY STUDY
Initial findings from a study designed to determine the effects of photo radar on highway safety are presented. The Safety and Regulation Division of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation published data collected during the month before the use of photo radar and the first four months of operation. Three site pairings were established to compare data for test sections using photo radar equipment and control sections not using the equipment. Researchers came to the following conclusions: 1) speeding decreased at all sites, but decreases were greater at the test sites; 2) the greatest decreases in the proportion of speeding vehilces at all sites were for vehicles traveling at the highest rates of speed; 3) media coverage about the use of photo radar affected the behavior of drivers at all sites; 4) the greatest speed reductions occurred on the six-lane test section; 5) the presence of signing announcing photo radar reduced speeding; and 6) increased enforcement presence and fully deployed photo radar units reduced speeding on the test roadways even more. Investigators believe that the reduction in speed will ultimately lead to a reduction in fatalities.
