ADVANCED TRAFFIC MODELS: STATE-OF-THE-ART
Many studies have proven that properly timed signalized intersections can reduce travel time, delays, vehicle stops, and fuel consumption--not to mention improve air quality. Traffic engineers recognize the benefits of computerized signal timing models; however, the applications, features, theory, terminologies, etc., vary substantially from model to model. More than 30 models are available, but training and technology transfer lag behind. This article attempts to identify the state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice for signal timing and analysis models. The programs listed are perceived to be the most popular and widely used in traffic engineering applications. A comprehensive table provides an overview of available programs, their features, and a summary of their applications.
