DESIGN CRITERIA FOR ROUNDABOUTS
Roundabout use as intersection treatment and a traffic management tool is becoming the norm rather than the exception in several countries around the world. The first Maryland State Highway Administration roundabout was opened in April 1993 at the intersection of MD 144 and MD 94 in Lisbon. In the six years prior to the roundabout, there were 45 reported intersection accidents with an average of eight accidents a year. In the two years since the opening of the Lisbon roundabout, there have been only two reported accidents. The performance of the first experimental roundabout in Maryland demonstrates the safety of roundabouts when properly designed. This paper presents a design criteria for both single and multi-lane roundabouts adopted from the Austroads, Australia's '1993 Guide to Traffic Engineering Practice', and the Maryland State Highway Administration's '1995 Draft Roundabout Design Guidelines'.
