NEW URBAN ROUTES--FACT OR FICTION?
The purpose of this paper is to address a few aspects of deciding whether or not there will be new urban routes to address future transportation needs. It draws upon recent experiences in Major Investment Studies (MIS), corridor planning, and system planning projects. The paper also suggests some of the challenges and opportunities for the profession--both planners and engineers. The ideas and concepts presented are those of the author and not necessarily those of the various state and federal agencies involved in the example studies. Discussion can be organized into two types of routes--urban transportation corridors and rural/urban corridors. The urbanized area corridors, for the purpose of this discussion, relate to those involved solely within a given urban area. The latter relate to those involving statewide corridors.
