RAKE'S PROGRESS IN ROAD SURFACING

The author reviews recent advances in road materials in particular hot poured compounds for joint and crack sealing in concrete, and all types of modern asphalt binders. He suggests that some modern binders do not have the required low sensitivity to changes in temperature. However a special addictive "asphapol", consisting of an amalgam of blended synthetic latices and a high viscosity fluxing agent, is incorporated in the manufacture of asphalt mixtures. A process using this compound has recently been developed to be utilized in overslabbing defective concrete pavements where reflective cracking in the asphalt carpet often occurs. The process provides a sealing compound capable of containing vertical movement between slabs, a 200 mm wide preformed flexible cover strip placed over the filled joint, a fine "asphapol" based "cushion course" laid 12mm thick and shaped at the edges to zero. A high stone content "asphapol" wearing course is laid on the cushion course after it has been trafficked for at least 24 hours. Initial costs of the process are similar to those of conventional methods because the increased stability of the materials used in the process allows thinner layers to be used. /TRRL/
