PRESTRESSED CONCRETE CANTILEVER BRIDGE IN NEW SOUTH WALES
The bridge over the entrance to brisbane water is believed to be the first design of its type in the world. Although the existing conditions favoured the construction of a long span low arch, a cantilever construction of similar shape was chosen because the former would have imposed severe thrusts and stresses on the foundations. The superstructure consists of two 240 ft long cantilever truss spans extending over the channel from each shore where they are connected and supported by an anchor truss span. The two cantilevers support a 120 ft long centrally suspended slab span. New methods were used in the bridge construction; joints within the truss were designed to remain pin-jointed until nearly completed so that the camber of the structure could be adjusted. In order to carry out these adjustments a group of 20, 18 inch diameter flat jacks remained in each arch joint until the joint was concreted. Conventional falsework was used for the land based anchor spans, but the 600 ft clear span between piers was constructed in 60 ft lengths without falsework. Precast elements used in the erection were placed by a 160 ft long steel truss mounted on railway tracks on the bridge deck. /TRRL/
