TRANSPORT OF THE FUTURE - THE VIEW BY MERCEDES-BENZ
This article discusses how deregulation and logistics could transform the freight transport and commercial vehicle industries, and provide new business opportunities. By the year 2000, the two dominant forms of road transport companies will be: (1) large hauliers, which operate worldwide and offer logistic solutions including warehousing, sea, air, rail, and road transport; and (2) many small- to medium-sized transport companies that increasingly subcontract for the multinationals. Logistic problem solutions contribute more than physical performance to competitive advantage. The advantages of road and rail freight modes need to be combined. Future logistic systems will be judged more by their total service quality. The Mercedes-Benz approach is based on: (1) further development of innovative automotive technology; (2) optimising environmentally friendly logistic concepts; and (3) designing intelligent transport management systems.
