THE STABILITY OF A SHALLOW CIRCULAR TUNNEL IN DENSE SAND DURING SURFACE EXCAVATION OR FILLING
A brief report is presented of results obtained from model tests to investigate the consequences of excavation or filling above a tunnel in dry dense sand. In two tests, sand was excavated from the surface by suction in increments of 5 mm until collapse occurred, and in a third test, sand was poured on the surface until the depth of cover had been increased by 45 mm; the tunnel pressure was then reduced until the tunnel collapsed. The results of the tests are briefly discussed. /TRRL/
