SOME PROBLEMS IN CONNECTION WITH HEAT CURING OF CONCRETE - TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS, MOISTURE MIGRATION AND CRACK FORMATION
NAAGRA PROBLEM IVD VAERMEBEHANDLING AV BETONG - TEMPERATURGRADIENTER, FUKTTRANSPORT OCH SPRICKBILDNING
This paper presents a summary of the most important factors which cause uncontrolled cracking in precast concrete components cured at elevated temperatures. The extremely high curing temperatures used in the modern precast concrete industry often give rise to great temperature gradients in time and in space, i.e. In structures, with the result that thermal deformation gradients and moisture gradients are produced in the concrete. In combination with the effect of water evaporation from the hot concrete surface, these gradients can cause the concrete to crack on the surface. On the basis of the author's experiences in the field, as well as those of others, the present paper discusses the conditions in the interior of the concrete subjected to various methods of heat treatment, and suggests some simple precautions which can be taken to prevent uncontrolled concrete cracking.
