A NEW APPROACH TO CHARACTERIZE THE CHEMICAL REACTIVITY OF THE AGGREGATES
The ASTM C-289 Chemical Method has been reinvestigated, taking into account the published complaints and introducing additional ideas. The new test is called the kinetic test, simply because the time is now a parameter. The granulometric distribution has been changed and the measurement of Na2O replaces that of OH- in order to determine the alkalinity reduction. The limits between the innocuous and deleterious aggregates have been established, based on field record performance and/or on conventional concrete (coarse aggregates) or mortar bar tests (sand) issued from 150 aggregates. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 871351.
