GERMANY ADOPTS DRIVER GUIDANCE SYSTEM
Brief details are given of an electronic guidance system, which has been accepted by the German government. The driver's equipment consists of a screen on the dashboard, and a selector, transmitter and receiver. The selector corresponds with area divisions of Germany, which have been accepted by the federal government and which divides the country up into numbered zones, there being 6000 different destinations in total. Instructions come from embedded induction units at the edge of the carriageway and are indicated to the driver by means of arrows on the screen. As the car approaches turn-offs, a series of pips remind the driver to watch the screen. The panel also shows road conditions and the best speed. The whole system is controlled by a central computer, which, in the event of traffic congestion, can be modified to change direction if necessary. /TRRL/
