URBAN VANDALISM - PREVENTION OR CURE - 1

The paper concentrates on some of the forms of vandalism, especially those related to highways, met by urban local authorities and measures which can be taken to reduce their impact. The main hope for the future seems to lie in long-term planning to establish those types of development - small estates of houses or low rise flats, with well-planned parking space - that give rise to less vandalism. In the short term, whilst direct methods of combatting vandalism such as new construction methods and materials for seats, telephone boxes and the like should be promoted, the indirect course of good design and patient replacement cannot be neglected. Neither should the involvement of local residents in schemes such as tree planting be ignored as A means of inducing civic pride and channelling surplus energies. (A) /TRRL/
