PREVENTION OF VAPOUR EMISSIONS FROM TANKER CARGOES
The problem of hydrocarbon gas (HC) emissions from the sea transportation of crude oil and oil products is of considerable magnitude, amounting to more than a million tons per year. As part of the Green Ships Research Programme in Norway, a conceptual method for reducing these emissions has been developed and evaluated through simulations. The method which involves the sequential transfer of tank atmospheres between the cargo tanks, is based on the principle that evaporation will not take place if the atmosphere above the oil surface is saturated with oil vapour. So the whole process aims at having the whole atmosphere above the oil surface as saturated as possible at any time.
