THE TODDLER AS A BICYCLE PASSENGER
Injuries of childeren who entangle a foot between the frame and the spokes of a wheel, as a passenger on a one-man bicycle, were studied. The parents of 14 children involved in such accidents were studied, June through November 1970. Bicycles were used improperly in all but two cases. Victims were riding on rear fenders, handlebars, and crossbars, with no safety precautions for their legs or feet. Injuries varied greatly in severity. Studies of bicycle spoke injuries are discussed. Five statements emerge from this study: The problem is a real one. The injuries sustained can be very severe. Bicycles are routinely misused. Used of a child carrier may lower accident incidence but it does not guarantee safety. One-man bicycles should contain only one passenger, the driver.
