PHOTOMETRIC REQUIREMENTS FOR LONG-RANGE ROAD TRAFFIC LIGHT SIGNALS
This paper extends the research on photometric requirements for normal urban vehicular traffic light signals to those for long-range signals on high-speed roads. The theoretical requirements are compared with the luminous intensities of currently available signal hardware. It is shown that commercially available equipment can currently meet the proposed minimum intensity levels, but further work is necessary to develop a suitable refrator to give a performance margin to cover deterioration in service. This work was done to assist the Standards Association of Australia Committee LG/6 in the preparation of a new Australian Standard for Road Traffic Signal Equipment.
