AIR POLLUTION WRANGLES AT IMO

For the first time there has been a full discussion in the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the issues relating to the development of a new Annex VI on air pollution to the MARPOL Convention. It will be the MEPC's prerogative to decide on the contents of the annex, which it is expected to take in time for a diplomatic conference in 1996. Opinion has proved to be very divided on increasing the global cap on the sulphur content of fuel oils from 3.5% to 5%.
