AN APPROACH TO THE CHOICE OF THE MAIN MOTOR AIMING AT OPTIMISATION OF MERCHANT CARGO SHIP EXPLOITATION

The paper analyzes an approach to the choice of main diesel motor which is considered in three aspects: ships's commercial speed, maintenance power and reliability. For commercial speed, the motor's "elasticity" has proved crucial, ie as big a range as possible between maximum and minimum output, within which the motor may run continuously. For maintenance power, its level is proved to decrease with the increasing number of cylinders at which the output, ie size of cylinders, has practically no influence. It has been proved that the main diesel motor, with configuration on four and more cylinders, must be considered as a partially parallel (sub)system, because without such a redundancy it would not be able to meet the needs of the desired reliability level. The level of reliability will depend on the number of cylinders, ie the quantity and quality of redundancy.
