MATERIAL TESTING AS AN AID IN ANALYZING SOURCES AND CAUSES OF ACCIDENTS
DIE BEDEUTUNG DER MATERIALPRUFUNG FUR DIE UNFALLURSCHENERMITTLUNG BEI KRAFTFAHRZEUGEN
Material testing covers a wide field, which also encompasses the examination of reasons for the failure or fracture of vehicle components. Various methods are employed, among them macroscopic and microscopic exposures of the fracture area, metallographical examinations, mechanical and chemical tests as well as nondestructure material tests. The appearance and geometry of fractures frequently offers conclusive information on the nature of the fracture, on the type and magnitude of the stresses the parts had been exposed to and on possible material defects. Data on the macroscopic plastic deformation will in most cases disclose the nature of the fracture (forced or fatigue fracture). Of considerable consequence is the question of crack propagation, i.e. the timing of the onsetting fatigue fracture. In this case the situation is vastly complicated if the parts have been exposed to alternating stresses. Macro and micro exposures of fractures are shown.
