A BROADER VIEW OF COLLISION AVOIDANCE

The report discusses Collision Avoidance Training, where the driver learns controlled braking and evasive steering and is afforded practice in applying both to simulated crash avoidance situations. Types of collision situations, or conflicts, and their preventive alternatives, are discussed. These alternatives involve the skills of perception, response selection, and manipulative. The primary focus of CAT is the driver's actual motor responses. CAT falls short of encompassing the total range of skills involved in avoiding real collisions, since CAT deals in simulation. Ingredients of an effective Collision Avoidance Program can be found among the techniques currently available. What is currently needed is a recipe for that total program.
