SINGLE POINT MOORING NEEDS TWO WAY DESIGN SUPPORT
When the maximum design force in a structural restraint is anticipated to be very large, a good engineering principle is to re-examine the design to see if the restraint can be avoided. An example of this is in offshore tanker moorings in an exposed situation, where a conventional four-point system may result in excessive forces in the mooring hawser. What is essential, is that the simplicity of the SPM concept does not lull designers into believing that a rigorous mathematical analysis and model testing programme are not required. Sufficiently comprehensive analytical techniques must be developed to describe the motions of the coupled tanker-buoy system. Only then can the techniques of mathematical analysis and physical model testing be used as complementary aspects of design used to validate each step.
