OPTIMAL OPERATION OF CARGO SHIPS: LINE DISTRIBUTION OF SHIPS VOYAGES
Given a fleet of different types of ships (e.g. General cargo, dry bulk...etc.) operating on different shipping lines, it is required to find the optimal distribution of the voyages of each ship of a given type on these lines. It is assumed that any ship operating on a certain line will follow the same routing pattern. Also, the quantities of the different commodities to be transported by a ship of a given type between any two ports, are taken to be in proportion to its market share. This market share is given as the ship dead weight (or volume) to the largest cargo traffic (weight or volume) available on the route links. According to these assumptions, the time period and the net operating revenue of each ship-voyage are calculated. Thus, the problem can be stated as follows To find the number of voyages each ship of each type can complete on the routes of the different lines that maximizes the total net revenue from the operation of the fleet subject to the permissible market share and number of calls for each ship on the route of each line, and the allowable working time for each ship in a given time period.
