CRITERIA FOR DEFINING SUB-AREAS FOR USE IN COMPUTER-CONTROLLED AREA TRAFFIC NETWORKS
A theoretical method of defining sub-areas (in the U.K.) is proposed, based on minimising delays and stops within the network. The author considers that a good knowledge of the network is essential to identify the following points prior to applying the method: (a) the class of each junction within the network, when classified according to its reserve capacity (b) the type of each road within the network when classified according to its waiting restrictions and pedestrian interference (c) the junctions within the network which are grouped and linked together for a unit complex operation. It is concluded that in the context of sub-area formation, the method minimises or nearly minimises the overall vehicle delay and vehicle stops in the network with respect to optimum cycle time; however, in practice, when sub-area boundaries are selected, modifications may have to be enforced to account for: (a) local linking (b) arterial roads and (c) skin friction effects. /TRRL/
