THE PREDICTION OF RUT DEPTHS IN ASPHALT PAVEMENTS
There are several possible approaches to developing a method for predicting rut depths. The one chosen in this investigation, conducted at the University of Waterloo, was to try to simulate in the laboratory what occurs in the field. This required the development of equipment which could reproduce the loading temperature conditions that can occur at any point in the pavement. These loading conditions had to be such that both the moving and repeated nature of traffic could be incorporated. Moreover, the equipment had to be capable of reproducing the compression loading in the top portion of the asphalt layer, or the tension loading in the bottom portion. /RTAC/
