HIGH STRENGTH STEEL ROLLS UP THE POINTS
Micro-alloyed, or high strength-low alloy (HSLA) steels have been used thus far primarily to reduce weight, improve fatigue life, save space, or to improve impact resistance; but before structural applications are developed, improvements are needed in formability, corrosion protection, price, and superior car design ingenuity. Experience with HSLA has been gained in some parts on 76 models. These include the Oldsmobile front bumper reinforcement on the 98 and Delta 88 and the Chevette bumper. Substantial amounts of the new applications will be in cold rolled products. As new steel products with improved corrosion protection hit the market, then HSLA cold rolled steel in thicknesses of 0.025 to 0.030-in. could find its way to production vehicles in later model years. Guidelines are becoming clear on the requirements for wider utilization of HSLA steels. Oil canning problems, the need for thinner part sections, the springback tendency, and front bumper reinforcement are discussed. The greatest hurdle is the translation of such tools as forming limit diagrams (FLD) developed in the laboratory. Recent research indicates that a whole family of FLD -n curves exist, each for different sheet thicknesses. With data such as these, the press shop use of HSLA sheet steels can immediately construct a workable FLD for each coil of steel.
