BITUMINOUS SHOULDER RUMBLE STRIPS
The purpose of the demonstration program was to monitor and evaluate the installation, or 'rolled' rumble strips and to assess their performance, maintenance, and effectiveness as an audible warning system to reduce run-off-the-road, hit fixed object accidents. Based on evaluation and assessment of the operational procedures, the placement of rumble strips on bituminous shoulders using the 'rolled' method of application is not recommended. However, the Department should pursue the feasibility of placing 'milled' rumble strips on butiminous shoulders where the accident history indicates remedial measures should be taken.
