DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF AN OPTIMUM TOWABLE OIL STORAGE CONTAINER FOR THE AIR DELIVERABLE ANTI-POLLUTION TRANSFER SYSTEM (ADAPTS)
This report includes a review of the concept study and scale model testing performed for the design and development of an optimum oil storage container. This container is to be used to remove the oil from a disabled tanker and return it to shore. The concept study consisted of a literature survey to review hydrodynamic, structural, and operational theory of flexible towed bodies. Six one-fortieth scale models were fabricated for screening type tests to evaluate hydrodynamic and operational characteristics. The tapered model configuration was selected for the prototype container design. The report covers the design of the prototype container including all accessory equipment. Fabric selection was made on the basis of the tow line tensions. Deployment, packaging, and emptying studies were performed on the 1/8th scale model for incorporation into the prototype container.
