OIL FINGERPRINTING USING DOUBLE BEAM FLUORESCENCE SPECTRA

Optimum excitation wavelength, sample concentration, and excitation and emission bandpasses were determined, and single beam fluorescence emission spectra for 10 different No. 2 fuel oils were obtained. The difference between the single beam emission spectra of any 2 oils can be represented graphically by the double beam instrument as deviations from a horizontal baseline. Additionally, to determine the lower limit of the double beam system for distinguishing closely related oils, 10 pairs of oils whose single-beam emission spectra were very similar were used to produce difference spectra. The rate of photodecomposition which indicated the length of time a reference sample could be used, the necessity of using matched cells, and the effect of small concentration variations were studied in the difference spectra. Other capabilities provided by difference spectra included the ability to cancel the effect of sample contamination. For a mixture of 2 oils or for contaminated oil samples where 1 component was known, the spectrum of the known component was substracted from the spectrum of the mixture, with the result being equivalent to a single beam spectrum of the unknown component. Examples and results are presented and discussed.
