THE BEHAVIOUR OF LIGHTING COLUMNS INVOLVED IN COLLISIONS BY CARS
HET GEDRANG VAN LICHTMASTEN BIJ AANRIJDINGEN DOOR PERSONENAUTO'S EN DE CONSEQUENTIES DAARVAN
Impact-tests between cars and different kinds of lighting column are studied. Lighting poles of steel, aluminium or polyester and of varying heights were tested. Some of the poles had frangible joints. The cars collided at speeds of about 35 km/h frontally or on the side. Horizontal, vertical and lateral decelerations of the cars were registered. These values are applied to the calculation of the acceleration severity index. If the values of this index are lower than one, the vehicle occupants will have no severe injury.
