VERSATILE VIBRATION
The Aveling-Barford VS series of self-propelled, centre-pivot vibratory rollers was developed from the operational experience gained with its rigid-framed fore-runner, the VP series, and with the VR series of tractor-towed vibratory rollers. The VSA roller, equipped with smooth, steel rear wheels and water sprinkler system is designed for compaction of bituminous materials, but for compacting soil and sub-base materials traction tread tyres replace the rear steel wheels. Compaction trials have been carried out on the five natural soil types most frequently encountered in the UK and on three common road-base materials. The performance of the VS roller is considered in relation to the requirements of UK compaction specifications. Trials have also been conducted with the following bituminous materials: dense bitumen macadam road-base, hot rolled asphalt wearing course and sand/gravel asphaltic concrete. Mean densities obtained and the variation of density with depth are given. The performance of the vibratory roller is also compared with that of a standard three-wheel deadweight roller of comparable weight. A further programme of testing on lean concrete enabled the relative performance of the VSA roller and a Bomag 200 to be assessed. /TRRL/
