SUB-B: A COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS METHOD FOR SWATH SHIPS
A panel method for computing wave resistance is extended to multihulls. A simple linear velocity condition and horseshoe vortices enforce the Kutta condition at the rear of SWATH struts. Attempts to obtain nonlinear solutions fail due to large areas of breaking waves behind the struts. For moderate Froude numbers up to 0.4, linear results show excellent agreement with experimental data. For fast SWATH ships, operating typically at Froude numbers between 0.7 and 0.8, the method cannot predict the resistance correctly. Computations are validated against data from a current systematic series of tests of SWATH configurations.
