EXHAUST EMISSION MEASUREMENTS ON THE HIGH SPEED CRAFT M/S SALTEN

The contribution to the total NOx emission in Norway from coastal trade is approximately 22%, and the Norwegian Maritime Directorate is preparing regulations intended to be active from 1 January 1995. These regulations are one of several measures to fulfil commitments to reduce the total NOx from Norway according to international agreements. As a result of this preparation, extensive exhaust gas emission measurements were carried out in September 1992 and March 1993 on M/S SALTEN, a high speed craft operating in northern Norway. The purpose was to measure the amount of harmful exhaust gas emissions from high speed diesel engines onboard high speed craft operating in Norway and also to investigate the influence of engine degradation and maintenance, and the effect of retarded injection timing. The measured emission components were NOx, HC, CO2, CO, O and particulates in addition to relevant engine parameters. The paper presents the results from this investigation, and discusses the influence of engine degradation, engine maintenance, and adjustments of static injection timing on exhaust gas emissions..
