HIGH-PERFORMANCE DIESEL ENGINES POWER HIGH-SPEED HYDROFOIL CATAMARAN

The RAINBOW, a catamaran hydrofoil ferry designed and built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, uses high-output diesel engines, combined with a special foil arrangement, to produce effective lift and low-drag performance. There are four Mitsubishi S16R-MTK-S diesel engines. Each of these 170 mm bore and 180 mm stroke, V- type , turbocharged, 16-cylinder engines has a maximum continuous output of 2100 kW at a maximum speed of 2000 r/min . Each catamaran section holds two engines driving a Mitsubishi MWJ- 5000A waterjet through a combining reduction gear.
