A STUDY ON FLOW SIMULATIONS AROUND THE SYSTEM OF SAILS

To analyze the hydrodynamic forces and moments acting on a system of sails, a computer program using the Vortex Lattice Method was developed. Taking into consideration the free vortex deformation caused by the wind, the accuracy of the estimations was improved. Where several sails are closely located and mutual interference occurs, the estimation of the hydrodynamic forces on each sail can be successfully carried out. To avoid the infinite velocity at the vortex centre, the Rankine vortex system is adopted in the computation instead of an ordinary vortex system. As a result, stable computation can be easily achieved to obtain the converged solutions. The paper discusses the following: 1) numerical techniques used in the computer programs; 2) validations of the hydrodynamic forces acting on each sail which is operating in the wake of the others and 3) applicable cases of sailing problems, especially the "hopeless-position" of the match lace of yachts.
