FRENCH AIRCRAFT-CARRIER 'CHARLES DE GAULLE' LAUNCHED
Another step was taken towards the first operational nuclear- powered European surface warship with the official 'launch' of the Marine National's aircraft-carrier CHARLES DE GAULLE, floating out from the Laninon building dock at DCN Brest on 7 May. The new ship is similarly dimensioned to the French carriers CLEMENCEAU and FOCH but somewhat more heavily built than those vessels with vital spaces given much better protection. Platform stabilisation is provided by a dual system, comprising two pairs of active fins and rudder stabilisation. The low uptake requirements of the nuclear plant allowed the island to be sited well for'd enabling an arrangement giving optimum utilisation of the 12 000m3 flight deck. The article includes a profile drawing and a list of the carrier's principle particulars.
