IMPACT EXCITATION OF TORSIONAL VIBRATION
Torsional vibration in rotating machinery has long been known to be a significant problem. Until recently, the investigation of such vibration has been difficult because of the lack of appropriate instrumentation. The advent of laser torsional vibrometers has allowed angular velocity variations to be easily measured but the difficulty of exciting rotating systems under working conditions has remained. This paper describes the design and testing of an impact device which provides excitation of torsional vibration. The results obtained indicate that it will be possible to investigate a wide range of parameters to torsional vibration modelling.
