STRENGTH OF DOUBLE HULL AFRA-MAX TANKER; PART 1: DEFORMATION AND STRESS OF MAIN STRUCTURAL MEMBER
FEM analysis was carried out to establish the strength of a double hull Afra-Max tanker which has neither a centre line longitudinal tight bulkhead or a swash bulkhead. The depth of the double bottom is the most important feature from the design viewpoint of a double hull Afra-Max tanker, and the deformations at the bottom and side shell are larger than those of an ordinary single hull tanker. The bottom girder and side stringer are effective to reduce the deformation of the double bottom and side shell, especially in reducing the relative deformation between the bulkhead and the adjacent transverse web. The side stringer already attached to a double hull tanker is useful in reducing the stress in the transverse web. The shearing stress is dominant at the point where large von Mises equivalent stress is calculated in the transverse web, which can be reduced by using thicker plate. See also the following abstract.
