CONTRAPROPELLER DESIGN AND MODEL TESTS OF ITS EFFICIENCY
A propulsor consisting of a propeller and a contrapropeller of reduced diameter is presented. The contapropeller design procedure is described, and an example of the calculation of its hydrodynamic characteristics is given. The hydrodynamic efficiency of the contrapropeller, installed behind the ducted propeller was investigated by model tests. The comparison of the calculated power needed for a trawler with and without a contrapropeller installed is made. With the contrapropeller installed, a 4-5% increase in efficiency is achieved during trawling and 7-8% during full speed sailing.
