SHIP-OF-OPPORTUNITY MARINE CABLE INSTALLATION
The high-cost, schedule-restrictive cable ships traditionally employed for the installation of marine cable systems are being replaced on the shorter cable lays with lower cost, locally available vessels equipped with modular, transportable deployment equipment. This method, is known as the "ship of opportunity" approach. The article describes new fibre optic cable deployment technologies which yield cheaper installations using these smaller vessels.
