EDI KEY FOR SHORTSEA SHIPPING DEVELOPMENT: THE ARCANTEL PLATFORM

There are many reasons to believe the time has come for the development of shortsea shipping. The arrival of the single European market from the end of 1992 signifies the end of national economies and the arrival of a European economy. Congestion and ecological problems are already restructuring surface transport modes and the concept of sustainable transport is emerging. Ports are located at strategic points to act as platforms for physical trade flows and flows of information in integrated chains in trans-European trade. EDI (electronic data interchange) is the new technology working in a real time philosophy, tied to advanced logistics caused by the deregulation of Europe post-1993. Only in this scenario is it possible to integrate shortsea shipping with inland connections as an integral part of the logistics chain from customer to producer. The Arcantel platform, launched by CEDRE (European Centre for Regional Development) has a target to develop shortsea shipping by computerisation and data communications in ports communities on the coast of the Atlantic. Its goal is to improve communications and to work in a real time philosophy with EDI technologies.
