THE EXPERIMENTAL RESPONSE OF FLAT-BAR STIFFENERS IN CYLINDERS UNDER EXTERNAL PRESSURE
The basis for model selection of two cylinders stiffened with flat- bar ring frames to be subject to external pressure is explained. Details of their fabrication are presented together with descriptions of the extensive pretest measurements undertaken to fully define their initial geometry and other relevant structural properties. Pertinent pre-test measurement results are presented, together with a detailed description of the test procedure. The experimental response of one of the models is examined, considering the growth of strains in the ring stiffeners and in the shell. Available deflection results are presented and the failure mode is described. The maximum pressure capability and mode of failure of the second model in which welding residual stresses were present is discussed and compared with those of the first model.
