PIPER B AND SALTIRE A - TOPSIDE DESIGN FOR INSTALLATION

In this paper the design considerations for installation of the larger modules for the Piper Redevelopment are described. The lessons learned during the design, construction and installation phases are discussed. The heaviest module, the production utilities deck (PUD), which weighed 10 750t and was lifted during December 1991 holds the world record for offshore lifting. The paper aims to demonstrate that large modules offer a practical solution to the construction of large topsides on offshore platforms. However, significant input during the design state from all parties is necessary to achieve the potential economies during fabrication and installation. The engineering of large modules need not be too sophisticated. A practical approach especially during the conceptual design state, is essential.
