NEW BARGE CARRIER FOR INLAND WATERWAYS AND COASTAL TRADE
A new semi-submersible catamaran has been designed for the transportation of barges on inland waterways and in the coastal trade. Designated the Trans Sea Lifter (TSL), it is claimed it could provide a free-flowing and cost-efficient mode of transport between inland ports in Europe and inland.coastal ports in the UK. The TSL resembles a SWATH, ie a catamaran of which the hulls are very than at their penetration through the surface of the water. A vessel of this shape experiences little wave-induced motion and structural stress when passing through waves. Another effect is that a small change in the vessel's ballast condition causes a large change of draught. This characteristic is used in the TSL for picking up or dropping off heavy loads, such as fully laden inland waterway barges, without the use of cranes.
