ALTERNATIVE FUELS FOR MARINE ENGINES

The CI engine is the most widely used marine type and Australia is dependent to a noticeable extent on fuel oil imports for it. Only on very small pleasure craft and work boats does the SI engine dominate. Here, Australia is better served with indigenous fuel resources. Nevertheless, engine development for alternative fuels needs consideration because emission legislation may eventually apply in confined waters. The most appropriate large engine fuel is natural gas which can also be readily used in small engines. Its disadvantage is that range is reduced. Methanol may also be used as a gasoline replacement and is well suited to the Orbital-type two-stroke engines which may enter this field before any other. No other alternatives seem suited to marine use, mainly for safety reasons. Engines for both these fuels are currently under development and are considered in the paper.
