REVIEW OF THE APPLICATIONS OF STRUCTURAL RELIABILITY TECHNOLOGIES IN OFFSHORE STRUCTURAL SAFETY

After several decades of development, structural reliability technologies are maturing and becoming one of the essential assessment and design tools in many industries. Structural reliability methodology has enabled designers and assessors to consider the effects of uncertainties on the design and in-service conditions of structure.s The methodology also provides rational ways to incorporate operational experiences into the assessment of structural safety. This paper reviews the applications of these technologies in offshore engineering, with particular reference to fixed offshore steel platforms. The paper summaries a selection of published achievements and reported applications of structural reliability in various aspects of offshore structural reliability in various aspects of offshore structural safety. Current and possible future trends are reviewed. The impacts on structural assessment and guidance development arising from the current philosophy associated with the new UK offshore safety regime is also discussed.
