M.V. VILNIUS - 1993 CONVERSION; A CONVERSION TO MEET REVISED TRADING PATTERNS INCORPORATING COMPLIANCE WITH THE LATEST SOLAS REQUIREMENTS

The train ferry VILNIUS belongs to the Lithuanian Shipping Company (LISCO), and was built for trading on the Baltic with the capability of carrying up to 103 rail wagons. An anticipated radical shift in future trading patterns for this class of vessel, which were constructed as cargo ships with basic facilities for only twelve passengers. would result in a future need to be able to load and discharge all types of road vehicles, both freight and passenger, with accommodation available for 112 passengers. This paper describes the conversion which included the following items in order to full comply with SOLAS to establish a passenger certificate for 112 passengers: i) provision of all new accommodation for the passengers in 46 - 2 berth cabins, a 20 person Pullman lounge, new restaurant, bar lounge with duty free facility, upgrade and increase of crew accommodation capacity, conference room, children's play area and additional toilet facilities. 11) design, supply and installation of a hoistable freight vehicle ramp with a lifting capacity of 132 tonnes. iii) construction of new internal watertight bulkheads to meet revised subdivision requirements. iv) supply and installation of new rescue boats and liferafts complete with their own davit launching facility. v) installation of new accommodation sprinkler system. vi) installation of vehicle decks drencher system. vii) modification and enhancement of existing structural fire protection. viii) installation of fire detection and surveillance systems.
