CONSIDERATIONS AND INVESTIGATIONS FOR THE DESIGN OF A ROCKFILL DAM WITH A 92 M HIGH BITUMINOUS MIX CORE
Based on experiments on other dams, fundamental considerations are presented on the evaluation of possible waterproofing techniques for a hydraulic pressure of 100 M. The most satisfactory solution was shown to be a thick earth core, then a bituminous core. Results of measurements made on the gepatsch dam (153 M high) show that (1) movements of the dam crest due to the settlement of upstream and downstream fills can cause longitudinal cracks which are not dangerous; and (2) the creep of the rock fill material situated near the slopes of the valley, towards the centre of the valley, becomes superimposed on that of the crest towards the foot of the dam. A study was made of the extension movements of the crest and of the effects of the stiffness of the rock slopes covered with a thin rock fill layer for the finterstal dam. The movements of the crest were solved by constructing a sloping bituminous core; as regards the stiffness of the rock slopes, it was estimated that a satisfactory bond is necessary. The bituminous mixture was tested in a triaxial apparatus; results of the tests showed that, even for a vertical core, it was possible to obtain stability under any stress and deformation conditions inside the dam. /TRRL/
