OFFSHORE EFFECTS OF OIL AND GAS OPERATIONS

Effects on marine life were determined for the following situations: oil production at Timbalier Bay, Gulf of Mexico, and at Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela; Natural oil seeps at Coal Oil Point, Santa Barbara, California; the chronic exposure to tar balls along the Bermuda coastline; and conditions under offshore oil platforms in the Santa Barbara Channel along the southern California coast. There is a negligible effect to marine life from chronic exposure to low levels of crude oil. Drilling platforms provide structures for the development of thriving, highly complex communities of marine organisms.
