MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT FOR THE CLEANUP OF OIL SPILLS

Physical or mechanical removal of spilled oil is a preferred method of dealing with oil spills. However, the design of such cleanup systems is complicated by many adverse operational and environmental considerations. These considerations include size and location of spills, logistic support requirements, fast response and equipment delivery, high water currents, and rough seas. Relative to these problems, past and on-going efforts are summarized, existing capabilities are assessed, and future R&D needs are identified.
