EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF RESISTANCE AND FLOW DUE TO DIFFERENCE OF ENTRANCE FORMS - INFLUENCE OF RADIUS OF CURVATURE OF STEM

To investigate the influence of local modification of entrance form on resistance and flow, the authors carried out resistance tests and flow measurement on four model ships with different radius at the stem. For these studies they developed a resistance test system using divided model ships in order to obtain bow resistances separately. A result of these experiments, the authors found significant differences of bow resistance and flow around the bow and showed an optimum radius at the stem. It could be considered that vortices at the bow play an important role in these differences of resistance. The relationship between entrance form, vortices and resistance is explained using Hawthorne's theory. The results of the calculation showed good agreement with some points of the experimental results.
