SURVEY OF BUS PRIORITY AT TRAFFIC LIGHT SIGNALS IN WOKING

This report concerns bus priority at the junction of Percy Street and Church Street in Woking. On two approaches to the crossroads buses are segregated from the other traffic. If the traffic lights are red when a bus is detected on one of these approaches then a 'hurry call' curtails the green time, but not the minimum green time, given to traffic on the other approaches to allow the bus to receive a green light sooner than it would normally. A survey was carried out to compare the journey times through the junction of buses and other traffic with, and without, the priority measures. A reduction in the variation of bus journey times and small decreases in their mean were measured then the priority was operating. The small reduction in mean journey time is thought to be typical of the benefits available from such a scheme. No significant change was measured in the total delay to other traffic due to the bus priority.
